What is a CCR:
1 How does a CCR works ?
To better understand the mechanics of a CCR when diving, it is important to first comprehend how does ventilation function. When we breath air, air enter our lungs with a mix of 21 % O² and 79% nitrogen (composition of ambient air). Nitrogen is not metabolised by our organism and our metabolism eventually vents it out.
However oxygen, is used by our organism and is supplied to our bodies as it is necessity for life, on every breath coming out , a portion of O² is not used and simply exhaled for every breath we reject about 16% of O² for 21% that we inhale . In reality this signifies that we consume only a quarter of the O² we inhale
this oxygen is lost when we dive we conventional scuba (Open Circuit). The O² that has been used by the cells of our body he replaced by a toxic gaz carbon dioxide (co2)
A CCR in diving is a piece of equipment that allows you to recycle the gas we breath, therefore you recycle the O² that is reusable (16% exhaled) and is only injectes the required oxygen ( 5%). Co2 is captured via a scrubber filled with lime that has the property to retain carbon molecules via a thermic chemical reaction.
2 What are the PRO’s of diving on CCR ?
- Redundancy: when properly prepared, a CCR with a filled O² tank, diluent air tank and lime have an autonomy of 3-4 hours, which is 4-5 times higher than a diver equipped with twin tanks @3200 psi. The consumption of O² being only metabolic, you can dive to great depths without having the hassle of carrying an extra amount of gas as you would in open circuit.
- Decompression: A CCR ( emCCR) has a gaz management system that controls electronically (Ppo2). It therefore guarantees you the best mix at any depth. To simplify things, this means that a CCR is a machine that blends for you at will Nitrox at any depth. While CCR diving you optimising your gas saturation and a re therefore automatically desaturating faster, it’s perfect when deep diving!!
- Hypothermia and dehsydration: while capturing co2, lime has a chemical reaction that will allow you to breath warm and moist air. You will be highly reducing risks of hypothermia and dehydration.
- Bubble-less silent diving: when you dive on ccr, there are no more deafening bubble sound. You can finally discover the world of silence. Fishes and faune in general is sensitive to the vibration produced by bubbles, you can easily approach them while being stealthy.
3 What are the challenges and safety precautions when diving on CCR?
When diving on CCR you need to give up using your lungs for biuoyancy. The gas you exhale being recycled in a loop, the gas you exhale or inhale stays in the loop and countersigns of the CCR (nothing is gained and nothing is lost) therefore your breathing volume is constant. Using your buoyancy compensator and drysuit precisely and masterly is key to obtain proper buoyancy mastery.
The eCCR diver uses a system an electronic system of gas injection. Like every electronic system some malfunction can be encountered. Submit just like the SUBMATIX Rebreather offers a wide number of safety and redundancy systems that makes it particularly safe. But by safety measures we always carry out a bail out tank.
To minimise risk , it is greatly important to respect protocols and to prepare the CCR’s with great care and caution by following checklists. CCR diving in the past has been presented as highly dangerous equipment, in truth the danger sin open circuit like in CCR is due to a lack of caution and in an excess in self confidence.
4 Who should be diving in CCR?
It’s great redundancy and it’s intelligent management of decompression clearly demonstrate that it is the must have for the diving enthusiast. Rebreathers is also the perfect tool for photographers and diving biologists.
It is for the most exigeant divers that wishes to explore in total safety great depth beyond 40m-120Ft, CCR’s combined with trimix opens up an ease of access to depth up to 100m- 330Ft.
5 How can i get trained and/or purchase a CCR ?

Diving in CCR requires a training of 8 dives ofer 5 days we also cover theory(to get the certification). At the end of this training you will be capable of preparing and using an Eccr by yourself.
